National Geographic Orbit

National Geographic Orbit

This awe-inspiring collection of photographs gives those of us stuck on Earth a glimpse of what our home planet looks like from the window of a space craft... and the big blue marble has never looked more beautiful. All the continents are shown, as well as weather events, the Aurora borealis, and the visible effects of anthropogenic environmental change--deforestation and desertification chief among them. Take a sobering look at our lovely planet and realize how small and fragile it really is.

All of the space photographs in this book were taken by astronauts using ordinary cameras held in their hands. If you were aboard and were pushed into orbit by seven million pounds of thrust from five rockets, you would see out the window what the photographs in this book show. Columbia was 185 miles above the Indian Ocean when a member of her crew grabbed a camera to record 250-mile wide Cyclone Litanne behind the Shuttle's tail. The astronauts use their free time to share their views from orbit with people on the ground and to photograph areas of special interest to scientists. Includes: Intro, Africa, Europe and Middle East, the Aurora, Pacific, Middle and South America, North America, About the Photographs, Index.
